For a small town, Malanda offers a surprising diverse range of things to do. This is the centre of the Tablelands Dairy Industry. The Malanda Dairy Centre offers locally sourced foods and a historical display featuring the history of the Tableland Dairy Industry. It also offers tours of the adjoining Malanda Dairy Farmers Factory.
On the edge of town is a rainforest featuring a beautiful swimming hole fed by a large waterfall and an environmental information centre offering the volcanic history of the area. In the Malanda Township, check out the historic Malanda Hotel built from local timbers, arts and craft shops and the fully functioning 1920 Majestic Theatre with its old style canvas sling seats.

Coolara at Rivers Edge Rainforest Retreat is a secluded 3 bedroom timber chalet, tucked away on 6 acres of ancient leafy rainforest. The Retreat has 300 metres of absolute frontage to the beautiful Johnstone River, with its magnificent rapids, secluded swimming holes, resident wildlife, and peaceful ambience, yet is only 5 minutes from the picturesque Atherton Tableland village of Malanda.
Rivers Edge Rainforest Retreat is a nature lover's paradise and a secluded haven to 'get away from it all' and rediscover the simple pleasures of life. Coolara is available for exclusive letting either in its entirety as a 3 bedroom lodge, or just the upstairs 2 bedroom living area.
The upstairs section is the main part of the retreat and is fully self-contained with 2 bedrooms, lounge and kitchen opening onto a large verandah with BBQ, casual chairs and dining furniture - perfect to sit back and enjoy nature's splendour.
An ideal couples romantic getaway, the upstairs lounge is very generous and boasts comfy sofas and reading chairs, library, DVD player with surround sound, VCR and of course television. There is even a writing/office desk with Internet access, telephone and facsimile. An impressive wood heater is the show piece of the lounge. A spacious gourmet kitchen is fully equipped with an extra large fridge, freezer, cook top, wall oven, microwave and dishwasher, plus all necessary crockery, cutlery, pots and pans.
The main upstairs bedroom has a king size bed, and a huge walk-in robe/dressing room, with views of the rainforest. Be lulled to sleep by the gentle burbling of the river. The ensuite is unbelievable, with a plate glass window and a glass wall that slides away to allow the double spa and shower to take full advantage of the natural surrounds - you will feel as though you are bathing at the rivers edge. The second upstairs bedroom, with two king single beds, is privately positioned on the opposite side of the house. Ceiling fans, a huge wood fireplace and reverse cycle air-conditioning maintains year round comfort.
For those guests wishing to let the entire residence, the downstairs section is a completely private retreat with a king size master bedroom with a private deck, walk-in robe, and ensuite with double spa and shower, which can also be completely opened up to enjoy the natural surrounds. The downstairs lounge has a comfy sofa, TV, CD player, reverse cycle air-conditioning, refrigerator and tea/coffee making facilities. Laundry facilities are also included for use by all guests.
The flexibility of the retreat makes it ideal for that romantic getaway for 2, or for up to 3 couples travelling together. Imagine relaxing on your own private deck, food sizzling on the BBQ whilst you gaze out over the river and rainforest, and listen to sounds of the birds over the gentle murmuring of the river.
Look for the endangered tree climbing kangaroo, possums, red legged pademelons, the cheeky wallabies and brush turkeys scampering through the undergrowth. Enjoy the river, the platypus, the turtles and fish, the rapids, the beautiful swimming holes - or just laze in a hammock by the rivers edge.
